🎼 Track Your Musical Journey: Introducing the Digital Learning Diary

Learning an instrument is a personal journey — full of small wins, creative discoveries, and steady growth. To support this process, I’ve created a Digital Learning Diary: a structured yet flexible document that helps students (and parents) track progress over time and set meaningful, achievable goals.

I manage this document for my term students and provide them with written feedback every term, clarifying their goals and summarising their progress, stumbling blocks and next steps.

What is the Digital Learning Diary?

It’s a simple but powerful tool for:

  • ✅ Recording key outcomes from each lesson

  • 🎯 Setting and reviewing short, medium, and long-term musical goals

  • 📈 Tracking progress across core skill areas like sight-reading, improvisation, technique, performance, and composition

  • 🧭 Mapping your learning to the ABRSM or Trinity grade levels, even if you’re not planning to take exams

Whether you're learning for fun or aiming to complete formal grades, this diary supports your development in a way that’s personalised and motivating.

Why Use It?

  • Keeps you focused — no more forgetting what you worked on last week

  • Shows how far you’ve come — great for motivation

  • Helps identify your strengths and what to work on next

  • Gives parents and adult learners insight into the process, with clear feedback

  • Bridges informal and formal learning — even if you’re not pursuing a certificate, you can still build a well-rounded skillset

How to Use It

At each lesson, we’ll jot down:

  • Your goals for the session or term

  • What we covered (pieces, techniques, creative exercises)

  • What to practise next

  • Any notes on mindset, focus, or curiosity that arose

Over time, the diary builds a picture of your unique musical identity — helping you stay engaged, see progress clearly, and develop real independence in your learning.

If you're already a student, this is something we’ll use together from now on. If you're considering lessons, it’s a great way to see how learning piano can fit meaningfully into your life.
